WORKING WITH MOODS AND EMOTIONS IN COACHING

4.30 - 8.00pm Tuesday 25th November 2008 Liveridge House, Henley in Arden, Warwickshire (J16 of M40)

As coaches, we often work with supporting our clients in taking actions towards their goals. Moods and emotions, as pre-dispositions for action, are critical in shaping our capacity for action. In this workshop we will be looking at moods and emotions from this perspective, and explore how to be present to, and to work with, clients' moods and emotions to expand their capacities for action. Participants will come away with an experiential understanding of how moods and emotions shape our capacity for action, and how to shift moods, both in themselves, and in their clients. Participants will also learn about how to be more fully present to their clients and their emotions, to "meet them where they are", and then to help their clients design practices to shift their moods, and expand their capacities for action.

Several contemporary thinkers, particularly Daniel Goleman, have been working with the issues of emotions and how they impact us in both our personal and professional lives. Emotions are not just about how we feel.  Moods and emotions pre-dispose us to action - when we are affected emotionally by an experience, then it fundamentally alters our capacity for action. This understanding is crucial to coaching, both in terms of understanding how to work with your own emotions and moods, and also in understanding how to work with the moods and emotions of the people whom you coach.
